An elaborately decorated fortune teller.
A fortune teller (also called a cootie catcher,[1][2]chatterbox,[3]salt cellar,[4][5]whirlybird,[3] or paku-paku[6]) is a form of origami used in children's games. Parts of the fortune teller are labelled with colors or numbers that serve as options for a player to choose from, and on the inside are eight flaps, each concealing a message. The person operating the fortune teller manipulates the device based on the choices made by the player, and finally one of the hidden messages is revealed. These messages may purport to answer questions (hence the name) or they may be activities that the player must perform.
The same shape may also be used as pincers or as a salt cellar.

- KAMI is a puzzle game in which you have to use the fewer moves you can to turn every piece of paper in each level into the same color. Each puzzle in KAMI shows a screen full of papers of various colors that make up different shapes. Your objective is to make the necessary changes so all the colors match.
- While Kami 2‘s puzzles can get complicated, the game feels less intimidating because of its gorgeous paper craft look. Kami 2 is the follow up to State of Play’s Kami. Both are puzzle games in.
Construction[edit]
A paper fortune teller may be constructed by the steps shown in the illustration below:[2][7]
- The corners of a sheet of paper are folded up to meet the opposite sides and (if the paper is not already square) the top is cut off, making a square sheet with diagonal creases.
- The four corners of the square are folded into the center, forming a shape known in origami terminology as a blintz base or cushion fold.[7] The resulting smaller square is turned over, and the four corners are folded in a second time.
- All four corners are folded up so that the points meet in the middle, and the player works their fingers into the pockets of paper in each of the four corners.
Telling fortunes[edit]
To use the fortune teller, the player telling the fortunes holds the four corners of the paper with index fingers and thumbs on both hands, keeping two pairs of corners together and the other two pairs separated so that only half of the internal sides of the corners are visible.
Manipulations are done by various similar methods, for example: The player asks a question of the person holding the fortune teller; this question will be answered by the device. The holder then asks for a number or color. Once the number or color is chosen, the holder uses their fingers to switch between the two groups of colors and numbers inside the fortune teller. The holder switches these positions a number of times: which may be determined by the number of letters in the color selected, the number originally chosen, or the sum of both. Once the holder has finished switching the positions of the fortune teller, the player chooses one of the flaps revealed. These flaps often have colors or numbers on them. The holder then lifts the flap and reveals the fortune underneath. Steps may be repeated to suit the users.[1][7]
Other uses[edit]
As well as being used to tell fortunes, these shapes may be used as a pincer to play-act catching insects such as lice, hence the 'cootie catcher' name.[2][5][8]
The 'salt cellar' name refers to a different use for the same shape, in which it stands on a table with the four points downwards; the four open pockets may be used to hold small pieces of food.[5]
In 2018, over 10,000 copies of this shape were used to create an installation resembling lava pouring from a building window, titled 'ORIGAMI LAVA' (David Oliva + Anna Juncà), for the Lluèrnia festival in Olot, Spain.[9][10]
History[edit]
This shape was introduced to the English-speaking world under the name salt cellar in the 1928 origami book Fun with Paper Folding by Murray and Rigney (Fleming H. Revell company, 1928, p. 10). The use of paper fortune tellers in England has been recorded since the 1950s.[11] Although the phrase 'cootie catcher' has been used with other meanings in the U.S. for much longer,[12] the use of paper cootie catchers in the U.S. dates back at least to the 1960s.[13][14]

The numbers you place in each box have to make the 'clue' number using the given operation.So, Kenken is an excellent game to practice the four operations and logical thinking. Here is a puzzle that seems simple, but is a good critical thinking challenge for lower elementary school kids. You can easily reword it for example to have two flocks of birds in two trees.Farmer Brown and Farmer Green were ruminating one day on the fence between their farms. Farmer Brown says, 'You know I was just thinking. If you gave me one of your cows, then we would have the same number of cows.' Farmer Green replies, 'If you gave me one of your cows, then I would have twice as many as you!'

SolutionIt is impossible to average 60 miles per hour. An average speed of 60 miles per hour requires two minutes to cover two miles. The first mile was covered at 30 miles per hour. This means that two minutes were used to travel that mile. Hence there are no minutes left to cover the second mile.

SolutionThere are 25 coconuts left. He will give out 3 coconuts at each of the first 10 checkpoints and empty his first bag. He has two sacks left. Then he gives out 2 cocounts at each of the next 15 checkpoints, emptying his second bag. Then he has one bag of coconuts left and only 5 checkpoints to go, which means he gives out 5 coconuts from the last bag and is left with 25 coconuts.

The milkman has no other spare containers and no way to mark any containers. He does not want to pour milk away. How will he measure the 4 liters of milk?
Solution- Fill the 5-liter container.
- Pour out from the 5-liter container to the 3-liter one until it's full. The 5-liter container now has 2 liters left.
- Pour all the milk from the 3-liter container back to the 8-liter container.
- Pour the 2 liters from the 5-liter container to the 3-liter container. It has therefore just one liter of space left!
- Fill the 5-liter container.
- Pour out from the 5-liter container enough milk to fill the 3-liter container (which already has 2 liters). You will have 4 liters left in the 5-liter container.

Number puzzles - Jigsaw puzzle for fractions, decimals, and percents
You can download a printable jigsaw puzzle to practice equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents, published here by permission from the creator Becky Colvin. You need to cut it out first. - Folding tissue paperWe fold a piece of paper, 1/10 mm thick, in a way as if we were to try and fit it in a little pocket: in half, in half again, in half once more, and so on.
Let's assume that in our minds (because in reality it's impossible – try it yourself!) we have folded our piece of paper 50 times. How thick will such a folded paper be? If you don't want to calculate, at least make an educated guess!
Solution.
It is 1/10 × 250 mm thick.
Converted to kilometers, we get that the thickness is (1/10) × 250 × (1/1000000) km = 112,589,991 km thick.
Those who do not know this problem usually assume that the stack will not be thicker than up to a couple of meters. However, the thickness of a piece of paper folded in half 50 times will be surprisingly big, more than 112 million kilometers! (The distance from the Earth to the Sun is about 150,000,000 km).
But.. it is not physically possible to do this. The length of paper you would need for this folding would be many light years long..!!! It is given by the equationL = π/6 · t · (2n + 4)(2n − 1)
where t is the thickness of the material and n the number of folds. (Formula by Britney Gallivan)
